Welcome Back 2009Welcome to the 2009-2010 edition of Directions. I hope these small devotions can be a word of encouragement as we walk with God on this journey called life! I have a friend who this very week is standing in front of some of the most scary people in the world—high school students. She made it through college, pretty much made it through grad school and now is a teacher! Another dear friend is in Africa facing one of the last jobs she ever thought she would get and if you knew the story you see that God had a plan and a sense of humor. And yet she is being stretched and pushed to the limits of body, mind and her faith. Maybe this is your first September on a college campus or maybe it’s your 4th or 8th…still there are things that can be challenging and downright scary.
As I enter this new school year I find myself going back to a verse I often return to and have shared before. The words are to Joshua who had a scary job. For one he had to replace Moses, I can’t think of any bigger shoes to fill than those. But he also had to lead a bunch of former slaves on a military campaign against superior forces in their own back yard! I would be scared but God gives Joshua one reason not to be…he says, “I am with you.” You haven’t left God behind. He still says this very day in the small town, in the heart of Africa and even in the cafeteria, “I am with you.” So be strong, be courageous, be true!
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
