Record Cleared! The young man was accused of sexual misconduct. The parents were told, the police brought in…the only trouble was he didn’t do it. He was innocent. But now his name was in the system. He was accused so he had a record! Now it quickly became evident to everyone that he was innocent. Nevertheless it took over 4 years and lawyers and time and effort before he finally got the letter. The court letter that said his record was cleared, expunged, as if it never happened. It wouldn’t stand in his way in a job interview, with a scholarship or anything else—he was innocent. This man’s case made me realize how difficult it is to have a clean record. I mean here an innocent man had to struggle to have a clean record in a human court. What about us who are guilty—what does it take to have a clean record in God’s court? In a sense it’s so much easier and harder. It’s harder because to remove sin cost Jesus his very life. To undo sin is not as easy as just erasing a record, not for God. It took a payment, it took a substitute. It took God’s Son taking our place, taking our sin, taking our punishment so we could be clean. On the other hand it’s a lot easier than bureaucratic red tape. Right now God tells us we are forgiven, we have a clean record with him no matter how far we’ve fallen. We don’t have to wait for it, hope it happens someday or pray we are okay when we die. No, right now we are justified or declared innocent by God and there’s no higher court than that!
“Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.” Romans 4:8/Psalm 32:2
