Kindness and Blasphemy
Larry David the Comedian who co-created Seinfeld apparently has a show on HBO called Curb Your Enthusiasm. Since I only have an old fashioned antenna I don’t get HBO and have never seen the show. However it’s being reported that during the last episode his character urinated on a picture of Jesus. One of the many thoughts that went through my head was, “Why didn’t he urinate on a picture of Mohammad?” I don’t know why he didn’t. Maybe he respects Mohammad or maybe he’s afraid of what would happen to him if he even had a picture of Mohammad. After all two men were just arrested in the United States for plotting to kill the Danish cartoonist who pictured Mohammad a few years back. I’m not trying to critique Islam but it did make me think. I’m glad Christians are not screaming for his head. I’m happy when Christians respond with patience and respect. And I love it when Christians who hear about such things pray for the people who are doing them. Sad to say I didn’t immediately pray for Larry David. Imagine you’re a firefighter trying to rescue someone and all the person does is call you dirty names and run from you. Isn’t that a tragedy. Then it hit me. God is so kind and merciful to us every day. He died for our sins. He blesses us with life and so many joys. And why? Because he wants us to see his love and turn to him, our Savior, our Life. Am I ever like Larry David? Do I ever take the forgiveness and love of Jesus for granted and treat it as nothing? Ignore God? Sin against him as if he didn’t matter? And yet he still holds out those nail scarred hands not only to Larry David but also to me and also to you. “So when you a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?” --Romans 2:3-4
