TLHA: Five stars for St. Michael'sFountain City, WI--The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently awarded St. Michael’s Lutheran Home an overall five star rating—the highest possible. A five star rating means the home was “much above average.” CMS’s “Five Star Quality Rating System” includes surveys, staffing and quality measures in addition to the overall rating. This is used for skilled nursing facilities throughout the United States.
This information is helpful to consumers because of the differences in the type and quality of care and services provided by nursing homes across the country. The five star quality rating’s purpose is to help consumers easily compare skilled nursing facilities and decide what questions they need to ask. In addition to using this tool, people looking for nursing home care are encouraged to visit many facilities, meet with staff, ask questions and talk with current residents and their families.
St. Michael’s and its parent organization, The Lutheran Home Association, based in Belle Plaine, Minnesota, support providing quality information to consumers. For people who have loved ones residing at a nursing home, Dean Dixon, Administrator of St. Michael’s, offers this advice, “Regularly visit the facility, talk with your loved one and/or closely monitor their condition, ask questions and get to know the caregivers. We welcome this close working relationship with our residents, their family members and guardians.”
