Dear fellow Lenten leaders,
One of the very interesting and enjoyable Lenten services in which I participated for a portion of my parish ministry was the Tre Ore, or “Three Hours” service, which focuses on Christ’s seven sentences from the cross through a series of 25 minute mini-services held from noon to 3 p.m.
Every year WELS and ELS members from throughout the area would come together to participate and share their talents. This included pastors, professors, choral directors, organists, two college choirs, an area Lutheran high school, two area Lutheran grade schools, one early childhood center, and four churches. One of our church’s staff members took care of all the arrangements for the service—a major undertaking.
The contributions and visible fellowship of so many is what made this service so moving—the diversity of singers and musicians, the skilled preaching from different pastors, the volunteers who coordinated the event. But most important was the message itself which led us to meditate on the depths Jesus traveled to pay for our salvation.
May God bless all the services you conduct during this Lenten season. May your people enjoy re-living the trip to Calvary which secured their salvation.
In Our Savior’s Service,
Dave Liggett
