File CollectionCMC: Betrayed!

Betrayed! I bet the disciples felt that way when they saw an armed crowd coming up the slopes of Gethsemane. Actually I think they may have felt only fear but then they saw who was leading this group. They knew him. They had spent three years by his side. They no doubt had many late night conversations together and shared experiences. And then he betrays them. Jesus is arrested, Judas even kisses him as the signal for the soldiers.

The terrible news coming out of Fort Hood is shocking. Here an American soldier who was even trained to help turned and started shooting his fellow soldiers…that’s hard to deal with. Death is death and yet being killed by the enemy is different than being killed by a supposed friend. The senseless nature of it. The unexpected tragedy. The betrayal of it all!

Of course my sin is a betrayal isn’t it? I betray God and turn against the one who gave me life, gave me existence and has filled my life with good things. Then I turn around and fight against him. And that doesn’t count the betrayals of others, people who should be helped by me and instead I hurt them. How amazing that Jesus would walk to the cross to save betrayers and that he would get there by being betrayed. That’s just like God! He turns betrayal and wickedness into salvation and forgiveness. He takes the cross and death and suffering and turns it into the resurrection and life. Please take a minute to ask God to turn this terrible event at Fort Hood into something good and be with all those who find themselves in the middle of this heart breaking news.

13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this…But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Christ would suffer. 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus.    Acts 3:13-15, 18-20

God is good and full of grace! I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. (John 4:35).
